Abstract

Vapour pressures of selenium have been measured over compositions between Se:Gd = 1·6:1 and Se:Gd = 2·0:1 using a radioactive dew-point method. Isotherms at 943, 1000 and 1075°K show the existence of a gadolinium polyselenide phase of variable composition between Se:Gd = 1·775:1 and Se:Gd = 1·862:1. X-ray powder diffraction patterns show a slight but definite increase in the size of the unit cell with increasing selenium content.
