Abstract
RESUME: Profesion perguruan mempunyai peranan penting dalam pembangunan sesebuah negara. Artikel ini – dengan mengguna-pakai pendekatan kualitatif, kaedah sejarah, dan sorotan literatur, termasuk temubual didalamnya – membicarakan perkembangan dan perubahan Perguruan Melayu Wanita pra-merdeka di Negara Brunei Darussalam dalam tempoh 1914 hingga 1983. Institusi perguruan bermula dengan perguruan tidak terlatih dengan pendidikan tidak formal. Kemunculan Residen British telah mempengaruhi institusi perguruan dengan penubuhan Sekolah Melayu pada tahun 1914. Sejak itu perguruan Melayu mula mengalami perubahan apabila bilangan pelajar wanita dan sekolah semakin bertambah, yang menyebabkan tenaga guru amat diperlukan. Hanya setelah tahun 1950-an, barulah institusi perguruan Melayu mula berkembang seiring dengan penubuhan Maktab Perguruan Melayu Brunei dan juga pemikiran ibu bapa yang lebih terbuka kepada anak-anak perempuan untuk bersekolah dan menceburi dalam bidang perguruan. Selain daripada itu, dorongan kerajaan dalam mempergiatkan peluang pekerjaan menjadi penyebab kepada penyertaan wanita dalam bidang perguruan bagi menabur bakti kepada bangsa dan negara. Perubahan ini drastik terus berlaku sehingga tahun 1983, apabila kaum wanita mendominasi bidang perguruan Brunei berbanding kaum lelaki. ABSTRACT: “The Malay Teachers Institution for Brunei Women in the Pre-Independence: Review on Developments and Changes”. The teaching profession plays an important role in the development of a country. This article – using a qualitative approach, historical method, and literature review, including interviews in it – talks about development and change the Malaya Teachers Institution in the pre-independence for Women in Brunei Darussalam in 1914 to 1983. The period begins with education institutions are not trained with informal education. The emergence of the British Resident has affected education institutions with the establishment of the Malay School in 1914. Since then the Malays Teacher Institution began to change when the number of female students and schools are growing, which causes much-needed the teachers. Only after 1950s, then the Malay education institutions began to grow in tandem with the establishment of the Brunei Malay Teachers College and also thought parents were more open to girls to go to school and get into the teaching profession. Apart from that, the government's encouragement in intensifying employment opportunities is the reason for the participation of women in the field of teaching to spread devotion to the nation and country. This drastic change continued until 1983, when women dominated the field of Brunei education over men. KEY WORD: Malay Teachers Institution ; Brunei Women; Social and Political Changes.
