Abstract
This study evaluates the improvement in the mechanical, microstructural, and environmental performance of slurry seal mixtures by replacing conventional fillers with waste glass powder (WGP). Mixing time test, wet cohesion test, loaded wheel test-sand adhesion, wet track abrasion test, loaded wheel test-deformation and surface free energy were done for mechanical and microstructural evaluation. Results showed that horizontal and vertical displacement of the conventional slurry seal (without WGP) were 47% and 31% higher than those of the conventional microsurfacing; however, horizontal and vertical displacement of the slurry seal with 75% WGP were only 19% and 13% higher than those of the conventional microsurfacing, respectively. Moreover, the replacement improved the cohesive energy of slurry seal mastic by 43%. A life cycle assessment (LCA) also showed that the greenhouse emissions and acidification potential of the slurry seal with 100% WGP were approximately 18% and 28% lower than those of the conventional microsurfacing, respectively.
