Can Pediatricians Define and Apply the Concept of Brain Death? Harrison AM, Botkin JR. Pediatrics. 1999;103:1277 [OpenUrl][9] Brain death in the pediatric patient is an important concept in the modern era. Over centuries, societies have struggled with the definition of death and the criteria that determine it. The definition of brain death is the irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brainstem. A task force that had multidisciplinary representation composed guidelines for the diagnosis of brain death in pediatric patients. These guidelines emphasize the pre-eminence of the history and physical examination in the diagnosis: [1]: {openurl}?query=rft.jtitle%253DPediatrics%26rft.stitle%253DPediatrics%26rft.issn%253D0031-4005%26rft.volume%253D80%26rft.issue%253D2%26rft.spage%253D298%26rft.epage%253D300%26rft.atitle%253DGuidelines%2Bfor%2Bthe%2BDetermination%2Bof%2BBrain%2BDeath%2Bin%2BChildren%26rft_id%253Dinfo%253Apmid%252F3615102%26rft.genre%253Darticle%26rft_val_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Ajournal%26ctx_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ctx_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Actx [2]: /lookup/ijlink?linkType=ABST&journalCode=pediatrics&resid=80/2/298&atom=%2Fpedsinreview%2F23%2F6%2F222.atom [3]: {openurl}?query=rft.jtitle%253DCritical%2Bcare%2Bmedicine%26rft.stitle%253DCrit%2BCare%2BMed%26rft.aulast%253DFarrell%26rft.auinit1%253DM.%2BM.%26rft.volume%253D21%26rft.issue%253D12%26rft.spage%253D1951%26rft.epage%253D1965%26rft.atitle%253DBrain%2Bdeath%2Bin%2Bthe%2Bpediatric%2Bpatient%253A%2Bhistorical%252C%2Bsociological%252C%2Bmedical%252C%2Breligious%252C%2Bcultural%252C%2Blegal%252C%2Band%2Bethical%2Bconsiderations.%26rft_id%253Dinfo%253Apmid%252F8252903%26rft.genre%253Darticle%26rft_val_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Ajournal%26ctx_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ctx_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Actx [4]: /lookup/external-ref?access_num=8252903&link_type=MED&atom=%2Fpedsinreview%2F23%2F6%2F222.atom [5]: /lookup/external-ref?access_num=A1993MK60800025&link_type=ISI [6]: {openurl}?query=rft.jtitle%253DClinics%2Bin%2Bperinatology%26rft.stitle%253DClin%2BPerinatol%26rft.aulast%253DAshwal%26rft.auinit1%253DS.%26rft.volume%253D24%26rft.issue%253D4%26rft.spage%253D859%26rft.epage%253D882%26rft.atitle%253DBrain%2Bdeath%2Bin%2Bthe%2Bnewborn.%2BCurrent%2Bperspectives.%26rft_id%253Dinfo%253Apmid%252F9395867%26rft.genre%253Darticle%26rft_val_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Ajournal%26ctx_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ctx_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Actx [7]: /lookup/external-ref?access_num=9395867&link_type=MED&atom=%2Fpedsinreview%2F23%2F6%2F222.atom [8]: /lookup/external-ref?access_num=A1997YG25300008&link_type=ISI [9]: {openurl}?query=rft.jtitle%253DPediatrics%26rft.issn%253D0031-4005%26rft.volume%253D103%26rft.spage%253D1277%26rft.genre%253Darticle%26rft_val_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Ajournal%26ctx_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ctx_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Actx
