Abstract

This paper presents a novel compact wideband, high gain and low profile artificial magnetic conductor (AMC loaded microstrip patch antenna(MPA) for satellite C-band (3.7-4.2 GHz) and 5.15 GHz WLAN applications. The broad impedance bandwidth(BW) is achieved by tuning the resonant frequency of the AMC surface whereas the compact size, high gain and high aperture efficiency are attributed to the use of the shorted microstrip loop. The proposed antenna has several interesting features, namely wide impedance BW of 27.5%, wider 3 dB gain BW (25%), a peak boresight gain of 10.9 dBi, an aperture efficiency of greater than 90% and a compact size of $0.9 \lambda_{0} \times 0.9 \lambda_{0} \times 0.06 \lambda_{0}$.
