Abstract
This article explores the extent and the causes of party discipline in the Swiss Parliament. It is based on analyses of the legislators' answers to two interview questions. The most important factors related to MPs' attitudes toward party discipline are party group membership, membership in one of the two Houses of the Swiss Federal Assembly, and regional origin. Variance in discipline among the parties depends on their ideology, heterogeneity of membership, and variety of economic and interest group affiliations. General attitudes toward party discipline do not explain variation in cohesion by issues.
