Abstract

This paper presents the usage of particle swarm optimization sliding mode control(PSOSMC) on load-frequency in multi-area interconnected power systems. Compared with other schemes, the PSOSM controller not only can reduce large overshoots, which occurs at the instant of the step change of parameters, but also its control law parameter setting is simple and easy to implement. As we all know, one of the main obstacles of SMC is the difficulty in choosing optimal controller parameter which defines the sliding surface especially for large multi-input systems. The PSO algorithm is used to search for the optimal values of both the switching vector and feedback gains in the control law. The proposed methodology considers power system's nonlinearity as well, including the valve limit on the governor and the generation rate constraints (GRC) problem. It is tested with a four-area interconnected power system. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.
