Abstract
The streamlines outside and inside liquid drops in an immiscible liquid undergoing plane shear flow were studied theoretically. Outside the drop there are regions of closed and open circulation which are separated by a limiting surface the proxicity of which to the drop depends upon the drop/medium viscosity ratio λ. The equations for the inner (closed) streamlines and for the equatorial periods of circulation of particles moving on inner and outer streamlines, already partially known, have been systematically derived and also shown to depend on λ. Preliminary experiments have confirmed the existence of closed, limiting, and open external streamlines. Their shape and location are sensitive not only to λ, as predicted, but also to the drop deformation.
