Abstract

A varve is a demonstrably annual marine or lacustrine sedimentary deposit. Varves provide a good method of dating past events. Because the deposition of sediment is related to environmental processes that are ultimately controlled by climate, the physical, chemical, or biological characteristics of a varved record provide a good proxy for climate and climate change.
