Abstract The structure of the pair correlation in stellar dynamical systems has been investigated through numerical experiments on small (32-body) systems. A very strong negative pair correlation prevents two particles from approaching each other too closely in the -space. There is weak attraction in the projection to configuration space. The dominant dependence appears to be on the pair energy. Possible forms for the pair correlation function are suggested. The result implies that all s-particle correlation functions are important up to and including the n-particle correlation in an n-body system.
