Abstract

Stellar dynamical systems were shown to possess the macroscopic irreversibility characteristic of statistical mechanical systems by means of a computer calculation of anN-body system. The irreversibility, corresponding to a linear increase of entropy with the time (over short times), has implications concerning the reliability ofN-body calculations in the sense of numerical analysis. The same calculation indicates the existence of strong cooperative phenomena in stellar systems.
