Abstract

Every sport requires specifically designed sports equipment. In order to make sports equipment with the desired specifications, the selection of materials is extremely important. Materials that meet all the desired properties depending upon the nature of the sport in consideration are often a combination of various materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. Materials used for making sports equipment are evaluated on the basis of their functionality, strength, weight, water resistance, and so forth. Comfortable, lightweight, strong, and durable equipment that support and enhance the performance of athletes are of prime importance in sports. The use of advanced polymers in sport equipment provides enhanced comfort, convenience, improved consistency, better functionality, and improved consistency over traditional materials.Artificial surfaces are good examples of the use of polymeric materials, which can withstand all weather conditions. There is a range of polymer materials that are used in a variety of sports activities today. The research in developing new materials will continue as more and more people have started participating in sports activities and there is a thirst for healthy competition and better performance among players and they keep looking for high quality, strong, functional, yet low cost sports equipment. This chapter demonstrates how polymers can be used in sports in different ways such as for making sports equipment, sportswear, sports footwear, and so forth. The range of applications of polymers in sports is large and this chapter covers the most popularly used polymers for various sports applications.
