Abstract

The equilibrium NpO 2 ++ 3 2 H +⇌NpO 2 2++ 1 2 HNO 2+ 1 2 H 2O was studied by TBP 30%-Dodecane under inert atmosphere to avoid disturbances resulting from nitrous acid destruction. The reaction is slightly endothermic (ΔH ⋍ 3·95 kcal.mole −1). The apparent mass action law constant increases with acidity, this effect resulting from an increase in entropy. At equilibrium, the apparent distribution coefficients of neptunium are poorly affected by temperature variations. The choice of optimal conditions for neptunium extraction depends mainly on the kinetics of oxidation.
