Abstract
Global environmental concerns and the ever increasing uncertainties over oil supplies have rekindled the interest in electric vehicles. After decades of development and an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars the vehicle range and battery life are still unacceptable for a viable electric vehicle. Ovonic Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries offer higher energy density and long cycle life and is the only environmentally acceptable technology suitable for electric vehicle applications. The interest in the Ovonic batteries for electric vehicle applications has been on the rise. After successful launching of the portable Ovonic batteries, Ovonic Battery Company is now focussing its attention on making this technology available in large sizes for industrial and electric vehicle applications. Sealed and flooded prismatic cells of various sizes ranging up to over 200 Ahr including cells for aerospace applications have been built and tested. In this paper we will present data on these cells as well as an overview of future developments.
