Abstract

Press of the 19th century Ottoman Empire is an important complement to the research of the history of Serbs. Although it has often consisted of propaganda and controversial in?terpretations of events, the Ottoman press brings in particular dynamics in exploring not only extremely important, but also everyday occasions, as the primary sources sometimes documented plainly and without sufficient detail. ?Dunav/Tuna Gazetesi? newspaper, with a tradition longer than ten years, is one of the most important media for exploring the southern part of Central Serbia during Tanzimat, when this region was under the administrative jurisdiction of Nis as the seat of the sancak with the same name. With over a hundred articles about Nis in the period 1865-1877., this newspaper contains numerous information about it, not only as the seat of the sancak, but also as the community in which the Ottoman authorities experimented with the modernization of their state.
