Abstract
Osteopontin(OPN) is an important extracellular matrix protein and proinflammatory cyto-kine. Recent studies show that the expression of OPN in adipose tissue is significantly increased in obesity and is primarily secreted by macrophages in adipose tissue. OPN promotes the accumulation of macrophage in adipose tissue by mediating chemotaxis and enhancing the function of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1. It also increases the level of obesity-related inflammatory cytokines in adipose tissue. Taken together, these results suggest that osteopontin may play a key role in the development of obesity and insulin resistance. Key words: Osteopontin; Obesity; Macrophage; Insulin resistance
