Abstract
ABSTRACT Colorants vary widely in chemical structure with each type offering a combination of properties uniquely different in some respect from all others. Colorant behavior is also determined by external factors including the system in which it is incorporated and the conditions under which it is processed and used. Information needed to assist the formulator in selecting organic colorants is outlined in this paper. This includes a definition of terms frequently used in describing colorants and their performance. Organic colorants are classified according to both color and chemical type and typical properties are described.
