Abstract

Abstract The main aim of this study is to determine the optimal turning process parameters for the machining of heat treated ductile iron bar using tungsten carbide Insert tool. Taguchi methodology is selected to evaluate the optimum turning parameters for better material removal rate (MRR) and good surface roughness. Process parameters like cutting speed (500, 770 and 1200 rpm), feed rate (0.5, 0.75 and 1 mm/min) and depth of cut (0.051, 0.102 and 0.159 mm) were analyzed by Taguchi L9 orthogonal array table. The effects of turning parameter on the material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness was assessed by the signal-to-noise ratio(S/N) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The result shows that material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness were highly influenced by cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. The regression linear equation was established and was validated by confirmatory experiment
