Abstract

Abstract We describe the construction and optimisation of an ultrasonic pulse echo system based on a miniature Nd: YAG laser as generator and an EMAT as detector. The Nd: YAG laser produces 22 mJ per pulse and the EMAT is designed to be preferentially sensitive to SH shear waves. The performance of this combination on a range of metal samples is compared to a broad band send-receive EMAT transducer.
