Abstract

The technique of dynamic programming is presented as a method of optimizing the staging sequence of urban highway improvements. The technique provides a method of determining the optimal sequence of highway improvement from the many sequences that are possible. An example urban freeway system is used to demonstrate the technique of dynamic programming. The optimal sequence of staging decisions for two decision sets are determined.
