Abstract

In this study, we synthesized Ga2O3 single crystals nominally doped with 1.0% alkaline earth elements (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) by the floating zone method. Then, we evaluated the optical (photoluminescence spectrum and decay) and scintillation (scintillation spectrum, decay, and pulse height spectrum) properties systematically. In photoluminescence and scintillation spectra, we found an intense emission from the UV to blue range although spectral shapes were different in each sample. Decay times were a few to few tens ns in both photoluminescence and scintillation. When we irradiated α-rays from 241Am, the scintillation light yields of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba-doped Ga2O3 were 570, 1030, 1100, 1560 and 1600 ph MeV−1(α), respectively.
