Abstract

A survey is given of the optical and magnetic data available for tetravalent actinide ions in a variety of single crystals and as pure compounds. Where possible, conclusions are drawn from the values of the “free-ion” parameters in crystals when compared with the values for the free ions in the gaseous phase. Problems with the theoretical model are discussed.
