Abstract
This Workshop will review the significant changes to evaluation and management (E/M) office encounter codes, which became effective in 2021, as well as break out into small groups to practice applying changes to vignettes specific to child and adolescent psychiatry. We will review strategies to streamline documentation while meeting all coding requirements. This session is targeted to relatively novice coders or members who prefer small-group learning. In part 1, presenters will briefly introduce the general structure and concepts of the CPT system to orient novice coders. In part 2, presenters will review the 2021 changes to E/M outpatient codes in detail. This will include a discussion of both coding based on medical decision making as well as coding based on time. In part 3, presenters will briefly review those codes that have not changed (primarily inpatient E/M codes) and discuss documentation strategies, offering guidelines for meeting coding requirements. In part 4, the group will split out into several small groups; presenters will guide each of the groups in discussion and practice with vignette examples, and participant questions will be answered. Attendees will gain an understanding of the guidelines for accurate coding of inpatient and outpatient E/M services, including strategies for when coding based on time is most appropriate, and learn documentation strategies to support accurate coding. Accurate coding decreases the risk of fraud and abuse. Understanding the guidelines for appropriate coding of psychiatric services, and the proper use of E/M codes, permits appropriate reimbursement for provided services.
