Abstract

In this paper I wish to discuss one type of case in which there seems to be an important difference between the referring uses of proper names and definite descriptions. I shall have nothing to say about what are sometimes called logically proper names , and though there may be differences between logically proper names and definite descriptions similar to those between grammatically proper names and definite descriptions discussed in this paper, I shall have nothing to say about these former differences. Let us begin by supposing that A wishes to communicate some information to B about some third person c). Two sorts of cases may be distinguished here:
