Abstract

Some diffusion theories for the generation of noise in semiconductors or tubes, published previously, are dicussed. After removing some errors it is pointed out that these theories will never explain 1/ f noise. However, the formalism is very useful for other diffusion phenomena. This is demonstrated for noise due to surface generation and recombination of carriers, for which a very general result is derived.
