Abstract

In this paper we present a concept involving utilizing both conductive and nonconductive elements in an anisotropic plain weave to form a microstrip antenna (MSA). This configuration results in a novel antenna structure with unique radiation modes. A reference MSA, a grating MSA, and an anisotropic plain weave antenna (APWA) were fabricated and tested. A Full wave finite element method (FEM) simulation of the antenna's performance was performed and compared with experimental results. The results show that the anisotropic plain weave configuration eliminated the TM010 mode, while enabling higher order modes.
