Abstract

By imposing a constraint ∫ g d 2ξ = A on the auxiliary field g ab , we reformulae Polyakov's bosonic string theory in such a way that the closed surface sector admits regular, finite action, stable classical solutions with positive definite quadratic fluctuations for all possible topologies.
