Abstract
The proposed article is a fragment of the comprehensive study of the Ukrainian historical oikonymy in the territories of the so called late-settlement areas, which, according to the current administrative-territorial division of Ukraine, correspond to the modern Donetsk, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions. The article briefly discusses the history of the settlement of the studied territories, which largely determines the nature of the local oikonymy. The main attention is paid to the analysis of naming processes in these territories, which allows to reveal their specificity. The research material was based on only historical (i.e. original) names of settlements, extracted from various written sources. The study has revealed that the names of settlements are the result of the interaction of extra-linguistic and linguistic factors, which, in fact, determines the specificity of the studied oikonymy.
