Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the behavior of the formal labor market in the Brazilian sugarcane agro-industry. The data from the Annual Social Information (RAIS), for 1995-2009, and the shift-share method, are used. The results indicate the Midwest Region has the largest generator of jobs in the period, especially in Mato Grosso do Sul State and Goias State, and the Northeast, Pernambuco State presented substantial losses in employment in the sector. The highlight in employment generation was the industry of sugar and ethanol, that exceeded the tillage of sugarcane, indicating that the mechanization has reduced the number of workers.
