Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine nurse practitioners’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) when screening and counseling patients who consume alcohol. This descriptive correlational study was completed through an anonymous, voluntary electronic KAP and demographic survey that was distributed through professional nursing organizations and snowball sampling. Analysis of 298 surveys identified the following KAP deficiencies and significant correlations: better attitude scores correlated with better resource and practice scores (P = .00), more resources correlated with better practices (P = .00), and older age correlated with decreased alcohol screening and counseling. Efforts to address deficiencies in primary care nurse practitioners are crucial to preventive medicine and overall health.
