Abstract

IntroductionSubstance use disorder (SUD) treatment is underutilized due to perceptions of stigmatizing behavior, thus leading to health inequity. AimTo determine the effectiveness of focused nurse practitioner (NP) SUD treatment education on preparedness, competence, and perceived stigma. MethodsFocused SUD education modules were provided to NP students. Pre–post surveys were obtained. Stigma was assessed using the Perceived Stigma of Substance Abuse Scale (PSAS). ResultsThe students unanimously reported an improved level of perceived competence in caring for patients with SUD. DiscussionIncreased perceived competence in ability to treat will improve overall care and increase equity in treatment for patients with SUD.
