Abstract

This paper presents the numerical investigations of impact-perforation phenomena of a 4mm thick mild steel plate caused by the impact of a rigid spherical projectile. AUTODYN software is used in carrying out the numerical studies. The projectile diameter is of 10mm and the plate is of circular disc of 50mm radius. The phenomena are described in terms of ballistic limit velocity, residual velocity, projectile velocity drop and plug ejection from the plate. Here, the impact-perforation problem is modelled as axi-symmetric one. The convergence of solution in terms of residual velocity has been checked for three different mesh sizes. Thereafter, numerical studies are made for an impact velocity range of 481-1000 m/s. The above described impact-perforation parameters are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental results.
