Abstract
The streamline diffusion method is a popular element method for approximating convection dominated transport equations. The solution to such equations may develop boundary or internal layers in the crosswind direction (orthogonal to the flow direction), and this results in numerical crosswind layers. It is known that the size of these layers is O(h 1 2 ) or perhaps O(h 3 4 ) ( h being the size of the mesh used in the numerical computation), but in practice O( h) is observed if the gridlines of the method are aligned with the streamlines of the problem. This connection is studied and an explanation is given.
