Abstract
Hypoxia (i.e., decreased O2 availability) is a pervasive physiological stimulus that profoundly affects biological systems. Systemic responses to acute hypoxia occur within seconds and are mediated entirely by reflexes originating from peripheral chemoreceptors especially the carotid bodies.
