Abstract

Several commutation schemes for DC choppers have been described in which the commutating capacitor is connected across the load and a diode is in ‘ antiparallel ’ to the main thyristor during commutation. A new scheme belonging to this group is proposed incorporating the beneficial aspects of the known schemes and avoiding their drawbacks. In particular, in the proposed scheme the permissible chopping frequency can be almost doubled for the same tq, αmin and commutation loss. The scheme has been analysed theoretically and verified experimentally.
