Abstract

The archeological research undertaken in Arles over the past few decades, particularly that of Rhône portuary middens, provides a rich corpus of stamps on Gallic amphorae (84 individuals, representing 32 different stamps). This documentation reiterates the importance of this port for the exportation of Gallic wine during the High Empire ; it also allows us to consider the existence of amphorae workshops near the city and to study the diffusion of these containers. Moreover, the presence of amphorae lids with stamps, which seems to be specific to the city of Arles, allows a better understanding of the social status of individuals involved in the production of Gallic amphorae, thanks to the presence of elaborate tria nomina.
