Abstract

The gens Victimarius (never encountered in a similar form) which appears on an inscription in Cabasse, the ancient Pagus Matauonicus (CIL XII 344 = ILN Frejus 165), is to be linked with the names of Celtic origin Vectimarus and Vectumarus by which people were known and of the gens Vectimarius of the citizens of Reii, as it is attested from an inscription of Sullecthum (ILAfr, 51). Since Cabasse is located very near the ancient territory of Reii, it can be deemed that Vectimarius and Victimarius (of which no examples are known at least as gens) are two variations on a same naming, and that the Victimaria of CIL, XII, 344, is issued from Reii. These facts prove to be an additional argument to question O. Hirschfeld's opinion linking the pagus Matauonicus to the ancient city of Aquae Sextiae, because the Voltinia tribe mentioned in CIL, XII, 344. Actually, people whose name is engraved are more likely to be citizens of Reii (also inscribed in the Voltinia tribe) who owned estates in pagus Matauonicus, in the Frejus territory, and who for that reason chose to be buried in this place.
