Abstract
This paper is an introduction to the discussion on Free Will in the philosophical tradition of Western Christianity, more especially in Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Theologica . Aquinas’s concept of free will is based on the ideas of Augustine of Hippo and Bernard of Clairvaux, two important Christian authors that analyzed the issue. Although other authors have dealt with this subject, the above three theologians formed the Christian tradition until the famous discussions between Erasmus and Luther in the 16 th Century, the watershed of Christendom’s institutional and theological rupture.
