Abstract

Laser excited semiconductors are in a state far from equilibrium. Close to intrinsic resonances they show large optical nonlinearities due to many-body effects. Nonequilibrium Green's functions are best suited to describe highly excited semiconductors, because they allow a consistent determination of the eigenmodes and the occupation numbers of the excitations involved.
