Abstract
For a package to function as intended, in protecting food, it is essential that its integrity remains authentic from the time of filling and closing until it is opened for consumption. This helps to guarantee the anticipated shelf life of the food. On-line non-destructive leak detection is the best method for testing all packages produced. It ensures that only containers with acceptable quality go into retail trade. Methods for non-destructive leak testing in commercial operations include pressure differential, visual, gas leak detection, and various tomographic techniques such as ultrasonic, acoustic, X-ray, electromagnetic, infrared and magnetic resonance imaging. In some applications, two or more techniques are combined to ensure maximum efficacy in leak detection. In selecting the most appropriate leak detection method, factors such as cost, operator training, compatibility with other essential production equipment, accuracy, sensitivity, and the equipment manufacturer's after-sales support are important issues to be considered. Additionally, the detection method selection also depends on the nature of the packaging, its geometry, material type, the packaged food, the processing conditions and the speed of the operations. This article discusses the main types of non-destructive leak detection techniques in commercial operation, while acknowledging that others are in various stages of development.
