Abstract

This final chapter summarises the content of the book. It focuses on the three major themes on which the book is based: (1) the needs for changing practice in transportation infrastructure management, (2) the use of risk management and adaptation frameworks, with associated decision support tools, and (3) the central role of water in the degradation and limitation of the performance of transportation facilities, assets and systems. Road and rail transportation and coastal zones are particular areas for attention in climate change adaptation. The chapter also outlines the needs for future research, development and innovation in developing a suitable methodology for the incorporation of climate change adaptation in the general stream of transportation systems planning and management. The major area for research is in the ongoing development of models and tools that can explicitly include climate factors and are thus suitable for adaptation studies. The major area for development of practice is in the adoption and adaptation of the available frameworks for climate change adaptation planning.
