Abstract

This study aims: (1) to describe students' perceptions of the value of ecology in the short story Whispers of the Land through determining the theme and characterization; (2) describe environmental phenomena in the students' perceptual short stories by referring to the ecocritical theory of Greg Garrard (2004). This research is descriptive qualitative research. The research instruments were questionnaires and short story text. Sampling is purposive. Data analysis through the stages of reducing, presenting data, concluding, and leveraging the research results. The results found: (1) the theme in the short story is the theme of waste pollution and varied research. Characterization, namely the short story Bisikan Tanah, is played by the character Aku and the character Pak Matrawi. Aku character has a character who cares about soil damage due to waste, while Pak Matrawi is a hard worker who uses rice fields to cultivate crops. Furthermore, (2) the environmental phenomena contained in the short story are disasters, disasters, and settlements.
