Abstract

New types of focusing transducer systems are proposed and their performance is verified by experiments. One focusing system is composed of a conventional focusing transducer and an isotropic solid medium with high longitudinal wave velocity. This system can generate a narrow sound beam and contribute to the improvement of a lateral resolution over a wide axial range. Another system is a zone lens that has circular grooves of varying diameter on its radiating surface. This lens can easily be fabricated and gives focused fields almost equal to those by conventional acoustic lenses.
