Abstract

"From Catcher in the Rye, we have gone to Claude Brown's Manchild in the Promised Land, although I question whether all who recom mend it really understand some of its more specific sexual descriptions. Social studies text books are carefully surveyed to test their treat ments of black leaders, of slavery, and of the reconstruction period, to determine to what ex tent they reflect new scholarship and how they measure up to the justifiable and understand able complaints that most of our textbooks have been guilty of white ethnocentrism."
