Abstract

This paper aims to unravel the different layers of gender justice debate in relation to UCC, the perspective of women?s movements and various feminist positions. It traces the demand of UCC by women?s groups in pre-independence India. It briefly looks at the constituent assembly debates surrounding UCC to highlight the rationale behind support or opposition to the idea. In doing so, it highlights the perspective of members of the constituent assembly regarding UCC. It then looks at the changing facets of political and feminist discourse in post-independence era. The paper delves into the reasons of changing stance of the women?s movement on UCC and the apprehensions generated by the current political climate.
