Abstract

An improved model for the transport equation of the dissipation rate ε is presented. The model was derived by testing individual terms of the ε-equation with the aid of direct numerical simulation (DNS) data for plane channel flow. The origin of shortcomings of modelling assumptions could be localized by fixing certain turbulent quantities during the calculation at the “exact” distributions obtained from DNS. The proposed modifications are based on scaling arguments, and we prefer using only assumptions with the correct asymptotic near-wall behaviour. The improved model was validated by calculations of plane channel flow and the comparison with DNS data and five existing models.
