Abstract

Gifu University Medical Library has been moved to the main campus in Yanagido as part of relocation of the School of Medicine and University Hospital to the main campus, and the new facility opened in June 2007. But the library was moved only three years after relocation of the school and the hospital, because of changes in the initial plan. Between relocation of the School and Hospital to the opening of the new facility, the Medical Library was composed of only a reading room for serials in the School and a corner for medical books in the main library, and could not function adequately. The new Gifu University Medical Library is a three-storeyed building with a total area of 2, 032m2, and stores about 178, 000 books. It is designed with special focus on the environment of usage of e-contents, improvement of the storing ability, and accessibility from the School and Hospital. After half a year of opening of the new facility, about 4, 000 people visit the library each month, on average, almost the same number that visited the “old” library before it was moved to the main campus.
