  • Gil, as he was known, was born in Los Angeles in 1921

  • He even went to business school at night to learn how to type, as it was one of the requirements for library work. Pursuing his interests in both medical and music librarianship, Gil moved to New York, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in library science and in 1952, a master’s degree in librarianship from Columbia University, where he studied medical librarianship with Estelle Brodman. He was mentored by Bertha Hallam, from the University of Oregon Medical Library, and chose to pursue a career in medical librarianship rather than one in music librarianship

  • In 1955, he was appointed librarian of the New York University (NYU) Medical Center, where he remained to the end of his career in 1986

Introduction

As he was known, was born in Los Angeles in 1921. He lived there for the first twelve years of his life but later moved to Salem, Oregon, where he attended the public schools, followed by Willamette University, where he majored in music and directed a church choir. Pursuing his interests in both medical and music librarianship, Gil moved to New York, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in library science and in 1952, a master’s degree in librarianship from Columbia University, where he studied medical librarianship with Estelle Brodman. For the seven years from 1948 to 1955, Gil was at the New York Academy of Medicine Library.
