Abstract

Objective: JDream II is a document retrieval system for scientific, technological and medical databases produced by Japan Science and Technology Agency. The library of Kansai Medical University conducted a trial survey on JDream II to investigate its advantages and usability in the medical field as compared with other databases. Methods: We distributed questionnaires to 76 persons, including medical doctors, co-medical staff, teaching staff and researchers, who were interested in using bibliographic databases. Results: For the 76 questionnaires distributed, 66 responses were obtained; 97% (64/66) had used bibliographic databases. 86% had used JDream II for the first time, and 53% (35/66) wanted to continue using JDream II because of its large literature collection (54%). More than half the new users evaluated JDream II as an excellent database. Conclusions: At present, bibliographic databases are necessary for all activities at medical universities. If JDream II can serve as an efficient document retrieval system not only in the medical field, but also in other natural sciences fields, it may be expected to become one of the essential databases for medical library users.
