Abstract

This chapter discusses certain investigations on computer music and computer sound generation. The objectives of these investigations were syntheses of music and sounds on a digital computer, and the development of flexible and widely usable computer programs for sound generation employing FORTRAN IV. The chapter also discusses an investigation involving thematic indexing by a computer, including the development of necessary hardware to permit printing of music by a computer. A topical index of musical treatises was investigated by Cecil D. Adkins, Associate Professor, School of Music, North Texas State University; this index now contains about 25,000 entries, with subsequent entries being added at the rate of 300 per week. The chapter also describes other investigations involving integrated composition of music and dynamic visual art, various compositional devices, MUSIGOL, MUSE, and Opera Codex.
